Similar story. Not long time I did not have much money to spare. Tired and frustrated on my metro ride home I started to pray for a sign that would indicate to get off the train early on the station with a lottery.
Nothing was happening. I was glazing all around and everything was normal. Suddenly I realized that the train on the other track came empty. That's not enough for a sign I said to myself. And then it strucked me! Money train! Yes that's the sign. I luckily got out before door closed again, bought a ticket and you know the rest of story.. Money waste as predicted.
Now I do much better but do not dare to take it as granted. I will never find out about pure luck or divine plan, or will I?

Some years ago I made a sincere deal with God. I would buy a lottery ticket (something I never do so the odds of a false hit were miniscule). It was a big one, Powerball or something. God would arrange for that ticket to win, I would have a powerful reason to become a believer, and every penny of the winnings would be handed over to the church in a move sure to generate a great deal of pro-God publicity. And I definitely would have handed it over, too. I was serious.

Either the answer was "I don't work that way" or there is no God, or no God who gives a damn whether I believe or not.
