Nathan,

Words like "sacred" and "spirituality" describe parts of human experience. People of all faiths, and no faith at all, experience the sacred, and most people— whether of any faith or no faith— have "spiritual" experiences at some time in their lives.

Druyan, and people like me, want to reclaim these terms from those who falsely assert that one must worship a particular deity— theirs, obviously— to be fully human.

How can something be "sacred" and not be, by definition" of God? Druyan wants it both ways. I really respected and appreciated Carl Sagan; he was great at what he did. As I understand it, Dr. Sagan was an avowed atheist; he did not believe that a god of any kind exists. Now. Anne Druyan wants to temper that view by bringing in "spirituality" and the "sacred." Why not just tell it like it is and not try to apologize for anything?

Anne Druyan is so awesome. I love how she carefully responds to such questions and how respectful she is, even if she disagrees. I wish she'd publish more of her writings in the vein of the collaborative projects her and Carl did together in the past.

Oh...thank you so much for this. I have often felt a real sense of sorrow with regards to the word spiritual and the fact that it seems so intimately tied to religion. This actually brought tears of express joy to my eyes.
