    Hello Ironwolf

I’m new to this sort of discussion, so forgive me if I offend you when I ask, why do you hate God so much? Why is it so hard for you to believe, your comments are disturbing and I can’t help but wonder if you have suffered so much in your life that you have shut off in order to make sense of your life. I agree that the Christian church and many followers of Christ have left a bad taste in the mouths of many, but dosn’t that go for any organized religion? I don’t have much to say except that I do believe in the God of the Bible, I didn’t always, I was a bit like you up until 8 years ago, but I won’t go there in this disscussion, if your interested you can let me know, but I’m guessing you won’t be. God loves you, even if you don’t love Him. Your opinion won’t change that. In my opion, it’s lunacy not to believe in Him. Deborah.

    Deborah,

I understand you may be new to this sort of discussion, but this sort of discussion is nothing new. I recommend you check out the Atheism FAQ, so you can avoid covering ground that has been covered many times before.

Briefly, I can’t hate something that doesn’t exist, so I can no more hate God than I can hate Zeus or Apollo. Sorry my comments disturb you, but not everyone believes as you do. My life has involved very little suffering— I have a good family and many friends; I just believe in one less god than you do.

Religion (Christian or not, organized or not) is a real problem for the world, because it stifles rational thought. I was raised as a Christian so I have an intimate understanding of its particular weaknesses. But you’ll notice that the cartoon of this post doesn’t comment directly on Christianity at all— it simply criticizes irrational believers that long to join the ranks of the accepted mainstream.

There is no rational evidence that God exists, and your “faith” won’t change that. And I think you know my feelings about what lunacy is.

Just a comment on your ten reasons. Actually just on the seventh one. To be fair, this one is primarily appropriate for dispensationalist Christians and others who don’t know their theology and have been influenced unduly by Gnosticism. Many of us believe that we are destined for THIS world in THIS body in the afterlife, and what we do now matters–not just saving souls but being involved in society, helping the poor, etc. Those of us who think this way share your disdain for such a world-denying escapism. Your easy out, I suppose, will be to bring up your point about so many Christians disagreeing with each other. All I am trying to say is that point 7 is easily your weakest one since it refutes popular distortions of Christianity, not the teaching held by Christians who have studied this topic to any decent extent. There is a growing consensus that this world and our bodies DO matter, and missions isn’t just to save souls.

    Dave,

My “easy way out,” as you put it, is simply this:

One down (for you), and nine to go.

Your feelings in their entirety, mirror my thoughts and feelings. Due to a troubled time in my life a few years ago, I thought, “Maybe I made the wrong decision that the Bible is just a bunch of unbelievable fairytails.” I turned toward Christianity with a ravenous sincerity to believe all of it, to change my ways. This led to the most confusing and frustrating time of my life…trying to force myself to believe the unbelievable. It’s incredible, once you’ve REALLY SEEN THE LIGHT, how silly and utterly asinine the Bible stories really are. I had put religion on the back burner, thinking that I’d really deal with it all some day, but, now that day has come and gone, and, although I feel somewhat diappointed that there’s not likely to be an afterlife, at least I have been finally set free in this one. I have printed out your blog and am going to try with it, to de-program a friend who has, in my opinion, lost 30 years of his life in this never-never land of Christianity.
