OMGWTFROFLOL! Apple Announces iPhone

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

Apple Computer Inc. has announced the iPhone. I always hated the look of so-called smart phones with their million tiny keys, and now I know why: Apple hadn’t done it right yet. Among other jaw-droppers, the device includes a multi-touch display as its primary input. The must-watch Steve Jobs keynote at Macworld is here.

Sam Harris on Spirituality without Faith

Monday, January 8th, 2007

Sam Harris has an article in Newsweek on Consciousness Without Faith, which I think would more accurately be titled Spirituality Without Faith. His views seem very much in line with those expressed by Ann Druyan I mentioned in my previous post.
There is no question that people have “spiritual” experiences (I use words like “spiritual” and […]

Ann Druyan, Carl Sagan, Science and Spirituality

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

The following excerpt is from an interview with Ann Druyan, collaborator and widow of Carl Sagan. Druyan spoke with DJ Grothe on the latest Point of Inquiry podcast, and I strongly recommend the episode and the entire series.
DJ Grothe: Let’s get back to spirituality in terms of science. You talk about that he viewed science […]

Radiometric Dating and Estimated Dates— A Scientist Responds

This article is a followup to an exchange I had with “Douglas” in the comments section of my recent posting, The Three Arguments Against Atheism. In that discussion, I offered to refer the question of estimated dates in radiometric dating to an actual scientist and post the result. The scientist I contacted was Dr. Daniel […]

2007: Year of the Inspired Atheist

Monday, January 1st, 2007

I have a New Year’s Resolution to announce, and a challenge for other atheists.

If you’ve read my blog for awhile, one thing should be abundantly clear to you: I am an atheist. But as atheism’s detractors will readily point out, and as I will readily agree: atheism per se is purely negative. Atheism is not […]

New T-Shirt Design: Good Without God

Monday, January 1st, 2007

Some claim that is impossible to be good without God. I know that’s not true— if you’re an atheist, then you are probably living proof! Publicly put the lie to this moralistic canard with this bold t-shirt, availble in unisex (4 colors) or women’s (black) styles in my CafePress shop.

Dawkins, Dennett, Sweeny at TED

Monday, January 1st, 2007

Recent must-see talks given by Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, and Julia Sweeny at the 2006 TED Conference.

Dawkins quoting J.B.S. Haldane: “My own suspicion is that the universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose.”

“I know many religions are so anxious about preserving the purity of their faith among their […]
