Mike and PH,
I see you just got a reply to your posts, but it might not be exactly what you were expecting!
http://mydevryjournal.blogspot.com/2008/07/no-more.html

Unfortunately he/she doesn't explain what the "class" was in the first line of the original post.
... And the last paragraph ("but only because it was assigned") is still suspicious.

Have you noticed that some blog writers don't like it when they get targeted by more than one or two posts?
... as if they should be able to write anything they like without being challenged.
------------------------------------------

By the way, the number of views for this thread just reached 1,666.
... Phew! It just clicked over to 1,667 ...  Grin

Sounds like he might be getting flack from Weinland's believers.

I still gotta wonder who's going to "assign" GFW as reading material, and what kind of class it is, exactly. And you're right, he hasn't provided any more information on it.

The only "teacher" I can think of who would be nuts enough to "assign" GFW has got to be a follower. Elders know better than to target the underaged, what with the church's (lip service) reversal on policy of recruiting children.

From the profile/blog information, I'm guessing this is a student of DeVry Institute (a ubiquitous franchise trades/certs school in North America), somewhere in New York. I just posted another comment (on the same post you did, Mike), requesting more information, and detailing the church's previous attempts to recruit underaged youth.

I agree it's very suspicious the blog author has been "assigned" the book, yet he refuses to detail how or why he was assigned it.

It might depend on your viewpoint -- this news is either good, neutral, or bad.
('Good' would mean that more people are being warned about the false predictions. Eg. "So far, they've all gotten it wrong.")

Another newspaper website has published information about ILFPRW and his book.
This time it is 'The Times Herald' from Port Huron, Michigan.
Quote
"Predicting the end of times fits nicely with some Christian theology. The Bible's book of Revelation has been used by a slew of authors and [false] prophets who have tried to nail down when the world will end. So far, they've all gotten it wrong. All it has done is to scare the daylights out of thousands of believers and to make small fortunes for some enterprising authors.
"Still, a lack of success has not deterred the predictors. The latest book "2008 God's Final Witness" is by Ronald Weinland, who suggests he has been appointed by God as a prophet to Christians, Muslims and Jews regarding the end of the world, although he does not set it at 2012."
http://www.thetimesherald.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080719/OPINION/807190310/1014

Note the article isn't quite up to date. RW's new date just happens to be in 2012 as well.

Hey, I just realized -- this means that the title of the book is incorrect !! -  It isn't '2008' anymore! Is he now guilty of false advertising Huh?
All the books waiting to be despatched are out-of-date, and - in theory at least - cannot be sent to anybody.

So far as I understand the reboot (which I don't really), the Great Trib is still set to begin this year. And if Weinland's going to crow about a newspaper article, he would have used the mention in the Toronto Star at the beginning of the year more than he did.

I haven't checked in for an answer on how the kid was "assigned" to read GFW. Anyone else?

He hasn't written again about the assignment, but three other bloggers have. They all appear to be from the DeVry Institute in Brooklyn(?), New York. (One of them mentions going to the Grand Army Plaza library, Brooklyn, N.Y.)
I don't have any experience of educational institutes in North America, but this seems to be a most unusual and risky assignment. The professor or teacher could easily become responsible for converting some young people to be followers of destructive cults -- under the guise of an assignment to critically review a "non-fiction" book.
In this case, the class appears to agree that the author (RW) is "crazy". See the second extract below.

----------------------------------------
http://dtise.blogspot.com/2008/07/gods-final-witness.html
Caution: strong language.
“…I started reading this book because I HAVE to for Humanity 422, Professor K's class (I have edited out her name because there are crazy people surfing the Internet)…”
I wonder… are we famous? Or crazy? Or both??
http://dtise.blogspot.com/2008/07/i-hate-reading-assignments.html
“…I almost would have rather taken the penalty assignment to count the tiles in the bathroom on the second floor, and then write a paper on it…”
I hope this isn’t just a penalty for not reading RW’s book. Hopefully it would be for not reading other assignments as well…
----------------------------------------
http://adesholaanthony.blogspot.com/
“…Today class was very entertaining to say the least. I was very happy to see that the whole class was in agreement as to how crazy Ronald Weinland is…”
Phew, that’s a relief !
----------------------------------------
http://flushing-mets.blogspot.com/
(scroll down in this blog for earlier posts)
I suspect this might be RW’s first book, and it is an English class.
“…This has been a very interesting day i would have to get to the point and talk a bit about the book i have to read for my english class. The name of the book is called end of time and the author gets into some deep thoughts about how the end of the world is coming very soon and that all the religions are all lies and that he is the next prophet chosen by God…”
However the author begins to agree with some points :-
“…The funny thing that i found interesting was that most of my class mates were straight out against the author on what he stated but i found myself agreeing with a lot of the things he mention so for a moment i felt like i was crazy like him, because that was what most of the classmates called him so it was pretty weird. But overall my faith in the almighty is to strong to let anyone or anything get in the way…”
========================================

As from today "Stones" will be taking a break from posting because Peter needs a rest!  Wink
However, if I'm in the Internet neighborhood in the coming weeks, I might stop by for a look.
Remember -- Go as far as you can see. When you get there you will see how to go further.

The course Humanities 422 is being taught by M. Samantha Kinsley and meets every Wed.

Here is her dog blog.

The term "Professor" is loosely attributed to her, as she's still working on her doctorate.  The question is whether there was an ulterior motive for her to assign one of Ronnie the Rebooter's books to her class.

One of the bloggers mentioned that most of the class thought Weinland's notions are silly, but there was one who seemed affected by it.

We'll know more if it flushes out Kinsley and/or Giannotta.

Actually there are a number of blogs from this class.  It appears to me that the instructor wants her class to read the book and blog about it.  I would say that the odds are that she is not a PKG member.

It is extremely peculiar that this “professor’ would assign Weinland’s book to her students. In fact, it smells rotten!

We must be careful of potentially libelous statements, remember this is all conjecture.

With this disclaimer out of the way, it is not unreasonable to deduce that the “elder” in the New York area might have a conjunctional relationship with this Samantha Kinsley.

Now, New York is a big state, and there might be more than one Red Hook in the Empire State.

This being said, cog-pkg has such limited resources that an “elder” would have to cover a large swathe of territory -- so traveling to Long Island is a distinct possibility.

I think we can safely assume that an “elder” would travel 3 or 4 hours to proselytize -- I KNOW THIS TO BE TRUE!!!!

Okay, I would doubt she's COG. Anyone notice the book on GHOSTS on the bookshelf behind her.  Isn't that type of literature frowned upon by COG - as necromancers and such?

Misfit,

I know there are members of cog-pkg in Long Island, and I know there is an “elder“ who makes frequent trips to that area. It would be a very odd coincidence if Kinsley took the initiative to assigned 2008 GFW to her students without being affiliated with cog-pkg.

If the membership of cog-pkg is declining, they would certainly accept people using a much less stringent criterion to join their ranks.

Weinland has already been relaxing the rules and regulations of cog-pkg -- he poked fun at those who attempted to purge their homes of all leavened foods during the Unleavened Feast.

He inexplicably admonished those in the church to display tolerance to those who have recently joined and do not observe all facets of church doctrine: since when is Weinland tolerant about anything?

I would think that if income of cog-pkg is decreasing due to shrinking tithe-paying members, someone like Kinsley would be welcomed with opened arms.

Yes, the book about ghosts could have been a pre-conversion item in Kinsley's house. PKG has REALLY relaxed the rules, from the old days, it's not just the deleavening and such; they even allow interracial marriage!  Shocked
