We're here for you anyway, motley band of not-quite-insane ex-CoGers that we are.......I know that's pretty much cold comfort, but that's all I've got. Anyone else have any words of wisdom/encouragement for nsj?
I probably don't qualify to be part of the "
motley band of not-quite-insane ex-CoGers" because I don't have any
direct experience of religious cults. However I have learnt a lot over the last seven months of reading all the ex-CoG forums and blogs. Empathy gets somewhat easier as time goes by. Also, while surfing around the Internet I have found a number of websites that have proved to contain a lot of helpful information. One example is the website of the
Spotlight Ministries in the United Kingdom. I think that this page in particular will probably interest
nsj -- if he/she hasn't seen it before :-
http://foresight-of-hindsight.blogspot.com/2008/08/have-they-been-recruited-by-cult_31.htmlThey show how to interact with cult victims, how to explain to them that you have serious concerns about the group, and how to present critical literature to them. (Amongst other things.)
Extract :-
"For example, explain to your friend that you have come across some literature which says some things which are causing you to have problems with the particular group which they are involved with. Ask them if they can help you with it and show you where the literature may possibly be wrong. If they still refuse at this point you can say to them that if they are not willing to look at the literature, then you are going to be left with the idea that the issues which the literature are bringing up must be true."
"Another approach is that of pitting one cult against another........."
Paragraph headings include: "I am Positive that it is a Cult. What do I do Now?", "Use Critical Literature Effectively", "Having the Right Attitude is Vital", and even: "What to do When the Person Leaves the Cult".

Experience apparently shows that people eventually do leave cults -- like Mr Arkadin's family members, and others who have posted occasionally in these forums.
This is a post that is designed especially to show to cult victims :-

Spotlight Ministries will not mind if you copy and paste the article -- especially if you include their credit and references.
Also, there appears to be a lot of helpful information at this site :-
